Joan Weaver


Joan Asfoury Betor Weaver, 74, surrounded by family, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2016, after a brief illness at Saratoga Hospital.

She was born on July 12, 1942, in Saratoga, NY. She was the daughter of the late Sarah and Fred Asfoury. Joan graduated in 1960 from Broadalbin High School, where she was the class valedictorian and participated in chorus, the senior play, cheerleading, National Honor Society and was fashion editor of the newspaper.

Joan graduated from the State College at Albany with a teaching degree. While in college, Joan wrote articles for the school newspaper, and was in the Gamma Kappa Phi sorority. She enjoyed a rewarding career teaching third and fifth grade at Skano and Tesago Elementary School in the Shenendehowa Central School District.

In June of 1964, she married Ronald A. Betor. They had two children together, and had a wonderful marriage until his death in 1981.

After Ron’s death, Joan was fortunate to meet Firm Weaver, whom she married in 1984. Joan and Firm were members of the Jonesville United Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir and they both volunteered with the food pantry.

In retirement, Joan enjoyed taking classes with the Academy for Lifelong Learning and worked on the Membership Committee. She also loved spending time at her home in Lake George with family and friends, working on crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble. Joan could often be found reading, and she participated in several book clubs with friends. She and Firm, were avid bridge players and made many cherished friendships playing bridge. Joan also loved to travel with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Firm Weaver, daughters Lisa and husband Craig Merry, Ellen and husband Tim Sinnenberg, step-daughters Nancy and husband Todd Paulauskas, and Karen and husband Josh Stratford; her brother, Fred and wife Sherry Asfoury. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren William Merry, Nicholas and Matthew Sinnenberg, Taylor and Tori Paulauskas, and Cole and Sophia Stratford.

Calling hours will be at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa on Sunday, December 11, from 3pm to 5pm.

A service will be celebrated at Jonesville United Methodist Church on Monday, December 12, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Ballston Spa Cemetery.
