Michael J. Aufiero

Michael J. Aufiero, 55, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 17, 2017, after battling a long illness. He was born on July 14, 1961 to Alphonse and Shirley Aufiero.

Mike was born and raised in Ballston Spa and graduated from Ballston Spa High School in the class of 1979. He was employed by Knolls Atomic Power Lab for 37 years where he was a well respected and admired supervisor, manager, and co-worker.

He was an active member of his community, where he served as Chief of Saratoga County Hazmat Team and long time member and brother of the Union Fire Company.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Lana Aufiero, their daughters Chendell Aufiero and Alyssa Aufiero; sister Judy Paine (Bill); mother in law and father in law Dick and Shana Carusone; brothers in law Todd Carusone “bro-bro” (Beth), Salvatore Carusone (Danielle) and Rich Carusone (Daria); nieces and nephews Stacey, Chris, Mike, Mark, Jason, Brandon, Shelby and Colby.

Funeral services will be held 9am Wednesday, March 22 at St. Mary’s Church, Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in St Peter’s Cemetery, Saratoga Springs. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, March 21 from 4pm to 8pm at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa.

Through this experience we have learned the importance of donating blood and platelets, and becoming a bone marrow donor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mike may be made to Albany Medical Center or American Cancer Society.

We would like to sincerely thank the Albany Medical Center Staff, especially D4 East and Medical ICU for their care and support during Mike’s journey. Mike appreciated you all so much.

My sincere condolences go out to Mike's family. I knew Mike from when I worked at the Kesseling Site for the DOE. Mike was a pleasure to work with, very professional, caring about his people and doing what was right for them and the program. He was one of those persons who made me look forward to going to work.

Tom Peet

May Mike rest in peace, he truly was a giving man who worked to help others who needed help at bad times. Thank you Mike.

Dearest Chendell,
My thoughts and sympathies are with you and your family during this incredibly sad and difficult time.
Your father sounds like a great man, may he never be forgotten.

Warmest regards,

I've known Mike for 28 years as a coworker at KAPL and a band member in the Union Fire Company. My lasting image of Mike will always be of a smiling helpful person that I wanted to be around. I will miss seeing him. My condolences to his whole extended family.

Mike was such an amazing person, no doubt about it. He never cared if you were young or old, weak or strong, he would help you in any possible way he could, The memories I had with him will forever be held deep in my heart, from walking around Saratoga Springs with him, to talking about anything and everything Fire Department related. It's hard to believe that he's gone, but his memory will be held forever by everyone that knew him. Rest In Peace, Mike.

Fireman’s Prayer

When I am called to duty, God
whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age.
Help me to embrace a little child
Before it’s too late,
Or some older person
from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
and give the best in me,
To guard my neighbor
And protect his property.
And if according to Your will
I have to lose my life,
Please bless with Your protecting hand
My children and my wife.

I am so sorry for your loss and am here for you at anytime if you want to talk, now or in the future. I lost my dad when I was 12, so please appreciate the time that you did have with him. And if the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, then he was surely a kind, smart and loving person.

Mike was a great guy, co-worker and fellow bus stop father. We had girls the same age and would talk at the bus stop. I called him fireman Mike because he seemed to live, breath, and serve the community and work in that sense. He was well respected by everyone. Mike will be sadly missed. Our prayers and love go out to the family.
May God bless you all.

I worked at KS for 3 months 8-9 yrs ago. When I was a fairly new guy at KAPL.. what I took away from my short experience there was how friendly everyone was! Especially 1 guy... Mike Aufiero... he changed my opinion on "management " and made me believe that they can be real people. I got to see him only a couple of times since.. but the impression he made on me will last a lifetime.. there are not enough Mike Aufiero's in this world! RIP Mike.

Meredith St. Denis

I had the pleasure of working with Mike at KAPL. I know I speak for others when I say he was a great coworker and peer. We will miss you Mike.

Chendell and the entire Aufiero Family. No words can express our sadness for your family at this time of loss. I had only known Mike and his daughter for probably about 5 hours. My heart was instantly connected to your family in that Mike reminded me a lot of my uncle. Strong, determined, a leader in his community and worked providing services others. My uncle too had leukemia and recently had passed away after a long battle. Instantly my tears began flowing not knowing how I could care for someone who brought me so many memories of my uncle, but I did one popsicle at a time.
My heart is broken for all of you as I said so many prayers that one day in the emergency department. You are all in my prayers and may your dad and my uncle hopefully find one another in that special place called heaven.
Continued thoughts and prayers to you all,
Kaylin D ❤️

There are people and families that are part of the fabric of any community. Mike Aufiero and his dad, "Chauncey", were a part of the fabric of Ballston Spa and served our community in so many ways. Mike's spirit will be missed. He has been a servant throughout his life, raised a wonderful family, and been an encouraging friend. Godspeed, my friend. Fly high in heaven with all of those "2's". You all will have a grand time together...

May our Lord keep your family in his special care during this difficult time. Keep the good memories alive always.
