Barbara A. Batten


Barbara A. Batten, of Saratoga Springs, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2011 at her home. Born in St Paul, MN, February 11, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Mary Beckjord. Barbara was a former resident of Heritage Village in Southbury, CT. She moved to Saratoga Springs in 1997. Barbara was a former member of the Woodbury United Methodist Church in Connecticut and a member of the Presbyterian-New England Congregational Church in Saratoga Springs. She was a silversmith and trained at the Rhode Island School of Design. She attended Swarthmore College in Pa., took various courses at Longwood Gardens in Pa., and also attended many classes at the Academy for Life Long Learning in Saratoga Springs.

Barbara was a life member of the League of Women Voters and a strong supporter of women in politics. She enjoyed the arts and attended the ballet, orchestra and many other programs in the Saratoga area. One of her favorite programs was her Yoga class. She enjoyed gardening, golfing and sailing.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick W. Batten, her daughter, Anne B. Callahan and brother, Walter E. Beckjord. Barbara is survived by her daughters, Mary B. Preston of Wilton, CT and Kathryn B. Oppedisano of Saratoga Springs, 5 grandchildren, Ian Preston (Nina), Rebecca Mannion (Steve), Samantha Travis (Paul), Rory Callahan, and Kerry Callahan, 6 great grandchildren, Matthew Preston, Evan Callahan, Emma Callahan, Kathleen Mannion, Robert Mannion, and Neve Travis, brother, Eric S. Beckjord (Caroline) of Brunswick, ME and several nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 10am Monday, June 13, at the Presbyterian-New England Congregational Church. Burial will be in Mayflower Cemetery, Duxbury, Massachusetts. Memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian-New England Congregational Church, 24 Circular Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 for their organ fund or a charity of one's choice.
