George V. McGuinness


George V. McGuinness, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 11, 2018, at the age of 93. The son of William and Josephine McGuinness, he was born in New York City on December 24, 1924. George served in the US Navy as a motor machinist mate in the Pacific Theatre during World War II on the USS Hackleback and USS Loggerhead Submarines.

Following the war, George worked as a diesel engine assembler at the American Locomotive in Schenectady. George started a dairy farm in Malta and farmed for 26 years. He owned and operated Murphy’s Motel in Malta for 25 years.

He was a member of the Malta Ridge Fire Department and served as chief. He was on the Malta Zoning Board of Appeals for 20 years and was the Board’s first chairman. He also served as the sole assessor for the Town of Malta for 13 years, retiring in 1987.

George was predeceased by his wife Barbara. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Wyckoff (Richard), stepdaughters Carol Bailiff, Karen St. Martin, and Barbara Barnes; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services with military honors will be held 2pm Tuesday, October 16 at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Schuylerville.

I grew up in Malta, just around the corner from the McGuinness Farm. And many years ago, my school bus would stop each school day in front of the farm. Wonderful country sites, like the McGuinness Farm, helped make my home town such a pleasant neighborhood to grow up in. Also helping to make Malta "home" were the countless hours that thoughtful residents, like Mr. McGuinness, gave in service of our community. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting you, I thank you Mr. McGuinness for being such a wonderful neighbor.
