John Walter Swertinski


John Walter Swertinski, age 88, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2019 with his loving granddaughter at his side.

John was born in Watervliet, NY on April 10th,, 1930, the son of the late Frank and Mary Swertinski. He grew up in Troy, NY and enlisted in the US Army from 1950-1953. He was accepted into the 11th Airborne Division and later served as Staff Sergeant of the 141st Tank Battalion in West Germany.

John started his own business as a Process Server for local attorneys. His career spanned 55 years, until his retirement at the age of 80.

John was full of life. He was a spirited man, a prankster, and always enjoyed a good debate. In his younger years, he enjoyed speed skating and downhill skiing. His hobbies included flower gardening, reading, wood crafting, and repairing cuckoo clocks. John treasured spending time with family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Mary, sister Helen, brothers Stanley and Joseph, and brother in law Joseph.

John is survived by his daughters, Erika Rose (Mike) Celella of Ballston Spa, NY and Heidi Rose (Greg) Sowder of Alpharetta, GA; his sister Jean Fiore; sisters-in-law Delores and Alice Swertinski; and several nieces and nephews. He was the proud grandfather of Sara Rose Fryer, Taylor Gregory Sowder, and Monica Rose Sowder; and devoted great grandfather to Brandon Dean Fryer, Hannah Rose Fryer, and Gabriel Evan Fryer.

Funeral services will be held 9:30am Friday, January 25 at St. Mary’s Church, Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa, where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Waterford. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday, January 24 from 6pm to 8pm at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa.
