Kevin C. Grupe, Sr.

Kevin C. Grupe Sr., 61 passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on December 7, 2018. Born in Niskayuna, NY on August 19, 1957, he was the son of Donald and Sandra Grupe. He was a graduate of Galway High School and SUNY Cobleskill.

Kevin was a hard-working dairy farmer, tending to his family farm in Ballston Spa the majority of his life. He most recently worked on the Eildon Tweed Farm in Charlton. Kevin was devoted to his work and to his family. Farming was his passion in life and he worked as long as he was physically able. You could always find him holding court somewhere on the farm, swapping the latest jokes and stories, even if he was the butt of the joke.

Kevin started young, joining 4-H and Future Farmers of America, winning many awards in each group, particularly after operating the farm in his young teens while his dad was taken ill. He was very active in Farm Bureau throughout his life and was a past member and EMT of the Harmony Corners Fire Department. For many years he served on the board of the Saratoga County Fair and was fair manager.

Kevin is survived by his beloved girlfriend Diane Coleman; children Kevin Grupe, Jr. (Doris), Justin Grupe (Kelly), and Nicole Solomon (Todd); grandchildren Tyler, Alex, Brandon, Keira, Andrew, and Kane; brother Clifford Grupe (Tammie); sister Kathy Chase (Rick).

Funeral services will be held 10am Wednesday, December 12 at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa. Burial will follow in Sweetman Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, December 11 from 4pm to 7pm at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Kevin’s name to the American Farmland Trust which “Saves the Land that Sustains Us”, 112 Spring Street, Suite 207, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

Kevin certainly loved farming. Loved it so much that every Thursday at Cobleskill, he’d run right from his last class to his car to get home as quick as he could.

On the outside, Kevin might have had a gruff personality. But inside, he had a heart of gold. Always kept us entertained that’s for sure. Small in size. Big in personality.

And he was always true to the FFA Creed, especially this part:

“I believe that to live and work on a farm is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny.”

John Epting
