Leon Hicks


Leon R. Hicks “Red” 84, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2019. Born on December 9, 1934 in Amsterdam, NY he was the son of Harold Hicks, Sr and Anna Baird Hicks, and stepson of Alton Chase.

Leon served in the US Army from 1954-57 in the 71st Infantry 53rd Regiment in Ft Richard, Alaska during the Korean War. He was a Sergeant Special Class Medical Aide Man serving as an ambulance driver. He received a National Defense Service Medal. He also took part in the Army Alaska “Exercise Moose Horn” in the Big Delta Area 165m from the Arctic Circle.

Leon was a member of the Laborers Local #157, retiring in June, 1985. He was a Galway Fish and Game Club life member and past president. Never afraid to ask anyone “You want to buy a ticket?” making him a top seller of gun raffle tickets. Leon was also a member of the VFW and American Legion Post in Broadalbin.

Leon truly enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, bowling and golfing with his buddy Gene. He enjoyed car rides, sitting in his recliner watching/yelling at the TV, playing cards on his lap/chest, doing word searches and the occasional nap. Leon always enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He regularly occupied a seat at Chucks and Stewarts while getting the “The Galway Gossip” and lottery tickets.

Leon was predeceased by his wife of 51 years Anna, sisters Gloria and Doris, and brothers Harold Jr, Fred, and a little angel.

Leon is survived by “his three girls” LeeAnn (Jim) Salisbury of Amsterdam, Cindy (Kelby) Truax of Ft Edward, and Traci (Adom) Giffin of Potsdam; grandchildren Kayla and Connor Giffin; step grandchildren John Salisbury of Gloversville and Jennifer (Ken) Kerfien of Fulton; great grandchildren Makenzie, Haley, Christian, and Brody; grand fur baby Sophie; brother David (Jen) Hicks, sisters Eleanor Merritt, Julia Hall and RoseMary (John) Shepard; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend a service with military honors 11am Friday, February 15 at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Schuylerville. All our invited to a celebration of life on Saturday, February 16 from 12pm to 3pm at the Raindancer Restaurant in Amsterdam.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to George/Sue, Gene/Edith, Tony/Ann, Joe/Jo , Pryscilla, and Frank for being the greatest neighbors, Dr Robert Parkes for giving him 24 more years, Alyssa and A-2 Girls at Saratoga Center for Rehab, the staff at Mohawk Dialysis Center in Amsterdam, Nathan Littauer Clinic in Perth, and the Fonda VA Clinic.

Sorry to hear of Leon's passing. He will be missed by all who knew him. I will always remember his infectious smile and his willingness to help his friends and family at a moments notice.
