Lester Joseph Beninati started life in this world on May 9, 1931 as the youngest of 10 siblings to Natale and Francesca Beninati in a small town in upstate NY. He was raised by the matriarch in the family, Ina C. Beninati, rest her soul, after their mother’s passing from delivery. Les passed on to better days on the morning of Monday, February 28, 2011, at Saratoga Hospital with his loving wife and daughter close to his side.
Les lived his entire life in Ballston Spa. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman. His life’s journey entailed a 3 year term as a Sgt in the USMC serving in the Korean War. He attended Ballston Spa High School and graduated in 1949 as an all sports athlete of the year. He continued his education at Ithaca College where he participated on their wrestling team and graduated with a bachelor of education in 1958. From there he pursued his Masters Degree and also attended Saint Rose College for night graduate courses which ultimately brought him to his life’s work as a Physical Education teacher for Interlaken Central School in 1958-59 and South Colonie Elementary (Village School/Forest Park) 1959-1986.
Les enjoyed life and attended his grandchildren’s sporting events at every opportunity he had. He was a lifetime member of the Ballston Spa Country Club of 51 years. He charmed everyone and anyone that he encountered, and knew how to lighten up the mood in any circumstances that arose.
Les has joined his parents as well as his siblings Ina, Anthony, Harry, Charles, Salvatore, and Louis Beninati, and Helen LaPoint. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia (Pelcher) Beninati, and their two children, Harry Beninati USMC, Ret. (Hye Suk) of Anchorage, AK, Leslie Robinson (Mahlon) of Northville, his sister, Josephine Sheftz, and his brother, Albert Beninati (Clara) of Charlton. He has 3 wonderful granddaughters, Angela of Anchorage, AK, Shawna and Francesca of Northville, and his one and only grandson, Scott of Anchorage, AK. Les was also very blessed to have the opportunity to share some of life’s joys with a great granddaughter, Jessalyn of Anchorage, AK as well.
A funeral service with full military honors will be held 1pm Friday, March 4, 2011 at the Gerald B H Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Town of Saratoga. Memorial contributions in Les’ name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 7020 AC Skinner Pkwy, Suite 100, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
His family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the emotional and affectionate support received from the Saratoga Hospital and from the caregivers on the C3 floor. These individuals include Susan, Jackie, Chris, Anita, Danielle, Gina, Amanda, Leah, Stephanie, Christina and Dr. Christine Dawson. The family would also like to recognize the excellent care and services provided by Kate (the transfusion nurse), Maggie and Jennifer in the inpatient admitting center and the staff on D1, Mallory, Angela and Lori, along with Kris (the director of D1).
