Robert W. Armer

Robert W. Armer, of East High Street, passed away Monday, June 20, 2011 at Maplewood Manor. He was 95.

Born on July 6, 1915 in Ballston Spa, he was the son of the late Samuel and Lillian Barnes Armer. A graduate of Ballston Spa High School and the Simmons School of Embalming, he received his funeral director's license in 1937.

Bob worked at various jobs while establishing his business, Armer Funeral Home, Inc, with his wife, the former Sara Vaughn. They began the business on the family farm on Goode Road in the early 1960’s. Bob worked at the Malta Test Station and the Saratoga County Infirmary, when it was located in Barkersville and was also a dispatcher for the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department. In 1967, Bob and Sara moved the funeral home to its present location on East High Street in Ballston Spa. A licensed funeral director for over 70 years, he was dedicated to the families he served and to the community of Ballston Spa and surrounding areas.

A member of Franklin Masonic Lodge #90 F&AM, Eastern Regional Draft Horse Association and the First Presbyterian Church of Ballston Spa, he was also a member of the New York State Funeral Directors Association, and as a member of the Adirondack Funeral Directors, was the recipient of a distinguished service award for his 70 years of service, in 2007.

A farmer at heart, his Belgian Draft horses were a welcome sight at the fair and he enjoyed every minute of it. He invited everyone to come out to the farm and enjoy a hay ride, a picnic, or just to sit and visit. He also raised Herefords, pheasants, turkeys and chickens. He enjoyed the simple things in life, watching the snow blow across the fields, taking long rides, morning coffee with the boys and watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Sara in 2008 and his brothers, Melvin and Clarence Armer, survivors include his children, Thelma and Douglas Armstrong, R. Thomas and Donna Armer, Eileen and Douglas Beckwith, Harry and Laurie Armer, Rebekah and Robert Rossi; his grandchildren, Glenn Evans, Lance and Kristen Evans, Lorilee and Michael Anthony, Juliane and Michael Carson, Jason and Ellen Armer, Melanie Armer, Saralyn and Aaron Critchlow, Lily Armer, Nicole Rossi, Nicholas Rossi, Scott Armstong, Amy and David Guy, Daniel and Debra Armstrong; his great grandchildren, Garrett Evans, Katielynn, Madison and Miriam Evans, Karson and Emma Anthony, Sydney Carson, Samuel and Paige Armer, Shane Rossi, Maddox and Mikayla Rogers, Daniella and Darby Armstrong and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10am Friday, June 24, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church, 22 West High Street, Ballston Spa.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 1-3pm and 6-8pm at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa.

Burial will follow in the family plot at Powell Wiswall Cemetery, Plummer Road in the town of Milton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or the First Presbyterian Church, 22 West High Street, Ballston Spa, NY 12020.

The family would like to thank the staff at Maplewood Manor and the staff and volunteers of Community Hospice of Saratoga for their outstanding care and compassion given to Bob during his final days. The family would also like to thank Bob’s caregivers, Lynn, Wayne and Mary for the endless hours they spent caring for Bob while he was still at his home.

A man I will never forget. He treated me like a son. So kind a wonderful man I grew to love and respect. He took me for ice cream as a young kid in his son Tommy's sixty seven Vet, that was such a big deal to me. He taught me how to stretch and hang barb wire and how to bail hay and milk cows. Harry his son taught me how to climb rope. One of the best Dads and family I have ever met. Thank you so much Bob and you too Harry.
